Large fishing vessel goes down off Point Grey

A fishing vessel was sent to the bottom of the Salish Sea and an environmental response team was on the lookout for any oil slicks after the 18-metre boat sank early Wednesday about three nautical miles off Point Grey near Vancouver.
The Canadian Coast Guard said a mayday call came in around 5:15 a.m. from the Allaverdy. A tugboat in the area arrived on scene first, minutes before a coast guard hovercraft arrived and plucked the vessel’s two crew members from the water. The hovercraft took 21 minutes to arrive, said the coast guard.
A coast guard spokesperson said the two men were treated for hypothermia and sent to hospital. Seas at the time of the sinking were considered calm and the coast guard said it isn’t yet known why the boat sank. The vessel did contain diesel fuel but a coast guard spokesman said no oil sheen was spotted and an environmental response team was sent to monitor the situation.
