Thousands celebrate naming of Salish Sea

Thousands gathered at the Songhees reserve bordering Esquimalt yesterday to celebrate the naming of the Salish Sea, the body of water that includes the Strait of Juan de Fuca, Strait of Georgia and Puget Sound.

"What a day, eh? Right on!" Lt.-Gov. Steven Point, a member of the Stó:lo Nation, exclaimed to those gathered in front of the Songhees Longhouse.

The Salish Sea stretches from Olympia, Wash., at the southern tip of Puget Sound to the edge of Juan de Fuca Strait near Port Renfrew and to the tip of the Strait of Georgia near Campbell River. The Salish Sea is the collective name for the waters, and does not replace existing names of the sea's three components.
